Bolesworth Announces Dates for New Summer Tour in 2024

The Bolesworth International will return in June 2024 as a two-week back-to-back summer festival tour.

Taking place over the 6 – 9 June and the 12 – 16 June 2024, the first weekend of the event will have more of an industry focus, whilst the second will focus on attracting the public with lifestyle and entertainment elements like 2023, as well as an Eventing Grand Prix, Mini Major and Puissance class.

Both weekends will incorporate similar schedules with CSI 3*/CSI 1*/CSI Am/CSI YH (5, 6 & 7yo)/CSICh/CSIP classes, with riders able to take advantage of a total of six Longines Ranking classes over the course of the event, including two 1.55m Grand Prix. 

The Bolesworth Elite Auction will take place on Friday 7 June, with applications taken soon for foals due early in 2024, yearlings and exclusive implanted embryos.

The full schedule will be announced in due course.

The new format for the Bolesworth International means that the Al Shira’aa Bolesworth Young Horse Championships, incorporating the FEI World Breeding Championship qualifiers will unfortunately not take place in 2024.

Nina Barbour, Bolesworth Managing Director said: “We’re hugely excited by this new format and our plans for 2024, as our priority at Bolesworth remains developing equestrian events to a world-class standard now and into the future.

“The decision to not move forward with the Al Shira’aa Bolesworth Young Horse Championships was extremely difficult, and we are hugely grateful for the support we have had from the team at Al Shira’aa and all our other partners to date. All options were investigated to retain the event, but unfortunately, the need to consolidate and use infrastructure for two weeks meant finding a suitable date to run it back-to-back with the International was not possible.

‘We feel strongly that it’s so important for our up-and-coming riders and horses to have opportunities to jump at an international level over more than one week at the same venue; before this, riders have had to travel abroad to find, and look forward to hosting six ranking classes over the 11-day period, including two CSI3* 1.55m Grand Prix’s.”

Day One At Al Shira’aa Bolesworth Young Horse Show

Day one of the Al Shira’aa Bolesworth Young Horse Show got off to a great start. Below is a summary of the highlights from the day.

Ashdale Sports Horses 4 Year Old Qualifier

43 of the 77 starters jumped clear in the Ashdale Sports Horses 4-Year-Old Qualifier and therefore have qualified directly for Saturday’s Final and have been placed equal first in this A1 class. The remaining 34 combinations will have to jump clear in tomorrow’s qualifier in order to qualify for the final.

Dallamires Stables 5 Year Old Qualifier

The second class of the day in the International ring was the Dallamires Stables 5-year-old qualifier, where 124 horse and rider combinations were hoping to jump clear and qualify for the Final on Saturday. 52 jumped clear and placed equal first. Unlike in the 4-Year-Old Qualifier, the competitors must jump both qualifiers and are awarded points depending on their finishing positions. Tomorrow’s qualifier will be a two-phase competition where each combination will jump against the clock in the second phase where the top 50 will be decided across both qualifiers and qualify for their final on Saturday.

Windmill Farm Estate 6-Year-Old Qualifier

Over in the castle ring we kicked off with the first of the Windmill Farm Estate 6-year-old qualifiers, where we had 110 starters in the two-phase competition. Benjamin Bick came out on top, riding John Renwick’s, “Michelob” just only 0.11 seconds over Nicole Pavitt in a second. The second qualifier will take place on Friday morning and will be when we find out which combinations qualify for the 6-year-old final on Sunday.

Helite UK CSI1* 1.25

The first of our International classes was the Helite UK CSI 1* 1.25 in the Castle Arena. This two-phase was won by the ever consistent, Mark Edwards and Casque d’OR (owned by Amber Bundock) in a time of 21.76, beating Tallulah Mackenzie Smith in second and Lucille Jane Porter in third.

Al Shira’aa 7 Year Old Qualifier

A dominant performance once again from Ben Bick saw him and Diamonds Diabolo Z take the win in the Al Shira’aa 7-year-old qualifier where he also took third, with John Crippen snatching second. Out of the 79 starters, 23 jumped double clear and 16 combinations in the prize money. The second qualifier on Friday will determine the top 50 that will qualifier for Sunday’s final.

LeMieux CSI2* 1.30

The final class of the day in the Castle ring was the first of the LeMieux 2* classes. Kara Whiteway came out on top of the hotly contested 1.30 class out of 74 combinations, with a time of 21.92 just under a second ahead of Ireland’s Sven Headley and Philip Spivey in third.

Bolesworth Elite Foal Auction Set to Break Underbidders Hearts This Friday!

An exclusive collection of elite foals and implanted embryos from black-type dams will be auctioned at Bolesworth this Friday 18 August at 8.30pm.

The Bolesworth Elite Foal Auction presented by Gallagher takes place during the Al Shira’aa Bolesworth Young Horse Championships, taking place at the historic Cheshire castle from 16th – 20th August.

The auction will commence with two charity lots offering semen for Ecclestone Z and Chacco Bay, in aid of Nature’s Safe, the charity masterminded by Tullis Matson.  These will be followed by two implanted embryos and 22 foals, with the foals available to view online now or in-person at the show from 17th August. An official preview will take place in the Bolesworth International Arena on Thursday evening at approx. 8.30pm, available to watch live on ClipMyHorse.tv.

The five-day Al Shira’aa Bolesworth International Horse Championship is free* to attend and showcase’s the UK’s rising talent as they compete for their place at the World Breeding Championships at Lanaken, Belgium in September. Top international names such John Whitaker, William & Pippa Funnell, Billy Twomey and others will be competing in international showjumping, with 1.45m Grand Prix on Sunday afternoon.

Equestrian Relief: Horse World Unites to Support our NHS Heroes

Horse Scout CEO Lucienne Elms and all members of the Horse Scout Agency Team  are thrilled to announce that leading Olympic riders from across the disciplines, as well as horse racing jockeys and celebrities have shown their support for a major fundraising initiative launched by the team behind Bolesworth and Liverpool International Horse Shows.

 

‘Equestrian Relief’ is an urgent fundraising campaign to raise money and change lives, with donations going directly to support the efforts of the wonderful work being carried out by the NHS.

 

Leading names are all showing their support including two Eventing World Champions Ros Canter and Zara Tindall, Olympic Gold Medallists Carl Hester & Scott Brash and racing legends AP McCoy and Frankie Dettori.

 

Each day two members of each team will take part in a daily challenge. The five challenges, which are; On the Gallops, Plankety Plank, Horse Drawn, Showstopper and Dark Horse will test our riders skills physically, creatively and artistically. Laura Renwick

Laura Renwick has retained her position of leading British female rider for a number of years. She is certainly one of the busiest riders on the circuit and admits to sometimes competing more than 10 horses in a day. Perhaps surprisingly, Laura only started competing seriously at 26.  We caught up with the 44 year old at the Equerry Bolesworth International Horse Show, to hear her story and find out what the season holds.

 

“I’ve got two top horses. Top Dollar VI has more ability than he has ever going to need but the rideability is always going to be a bit iffy so I have ruled myself out of selection for the World Equestrian Games this year but I am looking more towards the Olympics” she explains.

“I’m a bit short on top Grand Prix horsepower but we started breeding from some of my competition mares a few years ago and they are just starting to come through. So I’ve got some really promising young ones and hopefully this time next year, some of them will have reached fruition.”

Laura is married to former elite show jumper John Renwick, who gave up the sport in 2002 to focus on supporting his wife. She juggles competing all over the world with running the equestrian business and being a mother to son, Jack.

Amazingly it wasn’t until after the birth of her son that she started to make a name for herself as a rider. For many women, having children can force competitive sport to the back seat. Quite the opposite has happened for Laura, whose sporting career really started to take off after childbirth.

Introduced to horses by her mother, who owned a riding school, Laura was successful in show jumping from the age of 11. Prophetically, she bought her first jumping pony from John, her future husband.

At the age of 18, she questioned whether she wanted to make a career out of it and gave up competing for several years. “I was lucky that my parents supported me up to 18 but then but then I had to go it alone. This sport is tough, especially for anyone starting out and trying to support themselves. At the time I thought I should try something else.

Her sabbatical included being a flight attendant for BA and living in Spain. “If I had my time again I would have stuck at show jumping because it really is in my blood. That’s why I came back to it all these years later.”

Laura returned to the sport at the age of 25. She bought a young horse, which meant starting again from the beginning. Soon after, she met her husband on the competition circuit. To begin with it was purely a business partnership but it later evolved into marriage and parenthood.

“We bought some young horses together and in the early days whilst John was still riding at the top international competitions, I was producing the young horses. These are the horses that I am still riding now so it’s all been a working progress, we’ve learnt together. I think that’s why I have such a strong bond with our horses; we know each other inside out.”

As well as her training skills and empathy with horses, Laura is renowned for her fearless, competitive spirit. On a good horse, she would be hard to beat against the clock and has won a number of Puissance competitions. She won the prestigious Olympia Puissance last year, clearing 7ft on Top Dollar VI

A combination of skill, poise and style has garnered her sponsorship and she even took part in a risqué photography shoot to promote British show jumping. “It was a laugh and done to raise the sport’s profile, but I probably wouldn’t do anything like it again.”

This year Laura was asked to be show jumping ambassador for The Brooke charity’s “Every Horse Remembered” Campaign. I’m delighted to start my official support for Brooke as an Every Horse Remembered Ambassador. I’m looking forward to representing the campaign for Brooke in the British Show jumping scene” she said. “Horses have worked side by side with people for centuries, not least in the First world War. It’s vital that we remember the sacrifice they gave.

 

In order to stay in the game at this level, she and her husband have to be commercially minded. “We breed horses, train them and sell them, even some we would like to keep. John handles most of the business side of things now. He had a lot of injuries which is why I had to up my game and focus on competing.”

“We still have to make a living from it. Prize money in showjumping has gone through the roof, compared to what it used to be but you still have to have the horsepower to be at those shows with that prize money. You need to have a pool of Grand Prix horses to compete regularly at that level and the top riders have that luxury. So until you’re in that sort of league, you do still have to make your money where you can, so our horses are always for sale.”

Laura does not seem fussed that son Jack is more interested in football. “He can ride but has no interest in competing” she says. “I enjoy taking him to football training and have told him to work hard at it so he can look after us in our old age.”

The future looks bright for Laura and she hopes to consolidate her performance next season and “just keep enjoying it” she adds. Does she dare dream of future medals and team selection? “My top horse Top Dollar is more than capable. It’s just about hitting the form at the right time” she says.

What could be better than watching equestrian sport at the highest level, set against the back-drop of an eighteenth century castle, with an entourage of riders and spectators as dazzling and glamorous as an Oscars after-party?

 

Frankly, The Equerry Bolesworth International Horse Show is where the party is at this summer. “Bigger and better than ever with a huge variety at top level” says Organiser and founder Nina Barbour and looking at the line up, she’s not exaggerating.

 

This year, there will be five days of thrilling action including CDI 3* dressage, CSI 4* jumping, an Eventing Grand Prix and other fun arena events and demos including a Ride and Drive, Polo demonstrations and a Celebrity Fashion Show. The evening entertainment includes the Cazenove Eventing Grand Prix where Andrew Hoy, Carlos Paro and Alex Hua Tian are part of the entries. As well as the hugely successful Bolesworth Elite Auction for top jumping bred young stock. “It will be hard to beat last year, where the top price was £92,000 for a foal by Big Star, out of Tinka’s Serenade. Although this year’s catalogue has the strongest collection yet” says Nina.

Nina who has competed internationally in eventing and jumping, is a girl with the ambition and the know-how. Above all, the courage and conviction to dream big and make things happen. The 37 year old, who has also brought equestrian sport to the city of Liverpool, with the New Year’s extravaganza “The Liverpool Show”, has a commercial vision when it comes to managing the family estate of Bolesworth. Outside of Equestrian Bolesworth also plays host to Car Fest North and a number of other renowned outdoor events. She also set up the successful Harthill Stud, with the aim of breeding top quality eventers and showjumpers.

 

In just seven years, Bolesworth International has morphed from a Showjumping event attracting predominantly national riders in 2011 to an internationally acclaimed and important fixture on the FEI calendar as well as the social diary. Nina and her team have successfully lined up an impressive array of sponsors, including Equerry Horse Feeds and Bentley Motor Group, both of whom are local to the Cheshire showground.

 

Testimony to the growing success of the show, leading riders are queuing up to compete, which is why the entries list this year reads like “the little black book of equestrian sport”.

For starters, there are as many heiresses competing at Bolesworth as there were at the Royal wedding. Eve Jobs, daughter of Steve Jobs, the Founder of Apple and Sophia Abramovich will be competing in jumping whilst HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana of Thailand, who represented her country in the Asian Games, will be competing in the international dressage competition.  The Princess Nariratana is an international fashion designer and is the daughter of HRH the King of Thailand.

 

Then there will be British show jumpers John Whitaker, Laura Renwick and Amanda Derbyshire will be here. Whilst in dressage, Olympic champions Charlotte Dujardin and Carl Hester will be riding their exciting Grand Prix horses, Mount St John Freestyle and Hawtins Delicato, which they hope to take to the FEI World Equestrian Games in North Carolina in September.

Calle Bolesworth

Nina describes her event as being like “a big day out at the races”. The show is certainly becoming one of the key events of the summer social calendar for riders and spectators, whether they are horsey or not.

 

“Each year, we aim to come up with something new that will complement the sport and create a great atmosphere”, says Nina. “For 2018, we have the Bentley Ride & Drive, where riders compete in showjumping and then jump into a £150,000 Bentley Bentayga V8 to race around an obstacle course against the clock.  Music is also really important to us, and this year, we have the new ‘Club Boles’, which is beside the main ring.  We’ll have DJs, Ibiza Classics on the Friday evening and on Saturday night, the fantastic Rick Parfitt Junior will be rocking Bolesworth.  We have a big element of fun to what we do.  We want our visitors to enjoy world-class sport and be entertained as well.”

 

Family entertainment is also Nina’s prerogative with both Bolesworth and Liverpool. She explains why: “One of our big missions has always been to inspire young people to take part in equestrian sport.  We want to help to make sure that equestrian sport keeps growing and we want to make showjumping, dressage and eventing as accessible as possible.  I’m passionate about encouraging children to ride.  Children under 12 get free entry to our show and we also have lots of attractions for families.  We have Freestyle Motocross from the Arena-cross FMX crew all weekend.  There’s mountain bike displays, interactive electric bike zone, pony rides, exotic animals, crazy golf, an assault course, fun fair, inflatables and our Dog Show is always really popular.  One of our big draws is also the shopping, with everything from diamonds to designer shirts and with our Fine Food and Lifestyle Marquee we always celebrate local produce”.
