Description

My name is Amy Mitchell. I am an Equine Podiatrist covering Newark and the surrounding areas into Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire. I am a fully qualified Equine Podiatrist (MEPA DAEP). I also do visit days to the Huntingdon area in Cambridgeshire and the Tugby area in Leicestershire.

I have been involved with horses for most of my life. I gained my interest in Equine Podiatry when my thoroughbred mare had foot problems that didn’t seem to be helped by traditional farriery. After doing some research I began to question whether shoes were actually part of the problem. She had what are commonly known as “typical TB feet”, very flat, under run and thin soled. Against recommendations I had the shoes removed and with the help of an Equine Podiatrist went through a transition program using boots and pads initially to help her. It wasn’t a quick fix but I ended up with a horse who had pretty good feet that were no longer under-run and could work happily bare foot on most surfaces. This was something of a revelation to me and I was so inspired I went on to train with Equine Podiatry Training for 2 years who are affiliated to the Equine Podiatry Association. I am a fully qualified member of the Equine Podiatry Association.

My clients include a range of breeds and types from miniature shetlands, to cobs, sports horses, warmbloods and even donkeys.

I am quiet and patient in my horse handling. It’s always my aim to work with the horse building trust and confidence. I have received excellent feedback from my current client base with some fantastic results in transitioning horses out of shoes and using remedial trimming to correct a range of pathologies.

There are a wide range of conditions that can be helped using an Equine Podiatry approach. The trim is very much only one part of the solution. Nutrition and environment are key, as well as appropriate exercise and foot care regimes to name just a few influencing factors. An equine podiatrist will help you understand what is important for your horse as an individual to get the optimal hoof under him.

What can you expect from me?

I will be reliable and will treat you and your horse with respect and professionalism. I will be honest about your horses’ feet and what you can reasonably expect from them.
